Reading Civic Society which was formed in 1962 is a member of Civic Voice and is a National Charity. Sir John Betjeman was a keen supporter of the Charity and comedian, actor, presenter, campaigner and author Griff Rhys Jones was announced as Civic Voice's first President.
In 1986, Richard joined the Reading Civic Society, whose aims were to fight the wave of insensitive redevelopment that all but swept away the Market Place and Town Hall, and drove the IDR through Forbury Gardens., in fact the Town Hall space was earmarked as a roundabout! The Society members are dedicated to promoting conservation, in its widest sense. Thus, it is concerned to ensure not only the protection and refurbishment of the town's historic buildings, but the protection of its waterways, its river valleys, its countryside, as well as its parks and street trees. As important, it is concerned to ensure new development is of quality and sensitivity worthy of the town.
If you are interested in joining the Society, they offer visits to other towns and cities facing planning issues, along with guided tours and walks around places of architectural interest.
