Rotary Club of Reading

Sand Dam Project underway

The Jal Bhagirathi Foundation are experienced with water projects though until recently not sand dams - this is part of a programme of technology skill and competence building in Rajasthan. It is hoped to use this model to enable more communities develop the building expertise.
The Rotary funding is matched by HSBC to give a total dam cost of around 30k.
The triggering of funds from HSBC is a very important element of the dam building in Rajasthan and will extend to all future dams. Another important element is that local funding in India is coming through more quickly than expected. That should mean the Rotary & HSBC funding reduces enabling other geographic areas to benefit. With 2.3B people in drylands without access to clean water this is not a huge challenge, building the local competence is.
