Firstly, E-Clubs (the exact format of the names varies from club to club) exist to allow business, professional and community leaders to be Rotarians in modern-day working conditions. They meet online once per month using Zoom Video Conferencing facilities. At these meetings they discuss plans for fulfilling the aims of the eClub, which are identical to those of all other Rotary clubs, that is Service before Self. Currently, Dave's club is working in Swindon with the view of maximising the availability of hearing loops (sometimes called audio induction loops) for people who are hard of hearing. So far they have carried out over 500 audits.
Since its inception in 1905 the Rotary movement has expected great commitment from its members. But the long hours of present-day working conditions mean that many potential valuable members are effectively debarred from joining traditional clubs. Recruitment and retention has become a major problem and Rotary needs to change.
Eclubs are one solution but Rotary needs to make itself attractive and Dave suggested bringing in people by approaching individual firms and asking them to encourage their staff to help in specific ways on specific projects. If potential Rotarians emerged but they could not give full commitment, our Club might do well to consider helping to found a branch of the Rotary Community Corps (the RCC RCC?).
Dave is editor of the 'Reading Chronicle' so his advice on media relations was particularly interesting. He recommended 'sowing subliminal seeds' by sending in short news items especially when they showed in words and in pictures what good had been done as a result of our projects.
Question time and the queue of members wishing to speak to Dave afterwards demonstrated the importance that the Club attaches to his topics and suggestions. Certainly it was all food for thought.
Note: Rotary Community Corps are groups of non-Rotarians worldwide who share our commitment to Service. Visit www.rotary.org/rcc for full information.
